This book is right up there with the best I have read right alongside the likes of Pam Jenoff and Kate Mosse. I will admit that I am a fan of war-era romances and I have read a lot of them but there is something very special about this book. Well, what can I say about this? What a corker!! It really is an incredible read, this is the first book I have read by Lorna Gray and it definitely will not be the last. And as ghosts old and new rise to haunt her, Kate must rely on all her strength and courage to uncover the shocking truth hidden within a twisted web of lies… My View Kate can trust no one, not even the reclusive war-veteran-turned-crime-novelist, Adam Hitchen, a reserved widower and the only source of kindness in a shadowy world of suspicion and fear. Not the police, not the doctors, and not the guests at the Aberystwyth hotel she has come to in an attempt to find out what happened to her charismatic photographer ex-husband, and why her identity – and her life – are now at risk. Labelled a hysterical, grieving divorcée, no one believes she is being pursued by two violent men demanding answers she cannot give. Injured and terrified after an attempted abduction, desperation drives artist Kate Ward to the idyllic scene of her ex-husband’s recent suicide. While the bells of a Royal Wedding peel out to the fading echoes of war, danger stalks the coastline of Wales…

From Jay Asher, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Thirteen Reasons Why, comes a romance that will break your heart, but soon have you believing again. 2666 is an epic of whispers and details, full of buried structures and intuitions that seem too evanescent, or too terrible, to put into words. That is one reason why the book is so hard to summarize-and why Natasha Wimmer’s lucid, versatile translation is so triumphant. It is in Bolaño’s allusions and unexplained coincidences, in his character’s frequent, vividly disturbing dreams, in the mad recitations of criminals and preachers and witches-above all, in the dark insights of Benno von Archimboldi, who finally takes center stage in the book’s fifth section-that the real story of 2666 gets told. That is why so much of the activity of 2666 takes place not along the ordinary novelistic axes of plot and character but on the poetic, even mystical planes of symbol and metaphor. Time and again, Bolaño hints, without ever quite saying, that what is happening in Santa Teresa is a symptom of a universal derangement in which hidden dimensions of reality are coming horribly to light. (I’ll leave you to make your own enquiries!)Īnd then along came a sort of sequel that I was not expecting: The Seventh Scroll. So much so, that I nearly found myself checking through history books to see if Smith’s story and characters had any basis in fact. I was captivated by the character of the eunuch Taita. Well! I was stunned by an epic tale revealing the sweeping grandeur of Ancient Egypt, and narrated with the same authority and attention to detail that I had already encountered in at least a dozen other of Smith’s novels. I followed the Courtneys and the Ballantynes, and then came River God. I was immediately immersed in historical fiction the like of which I have never experienced throughout the thirty or more years since that holiday. When The Lion Feeds was my introduction to this most diligent of writers. I needed something to read, and there were several paperbacks left behind in our rented villa. I was first introduced to Wilbur Smith’s writing several years ago while laid up with my leg in plaster halfway through a holiday in Lanzarote. The adventures leading to these disasters all had a common purpose: to get to Slumberland, where he had been summoned by King Morpheus, to be the "playmate" of his daughter, the Princess. In the earliest strips, the dream event that woke him up would always be some mishap or disaster that seemed about to lead to serious injury or death, such as being crushed by giant mushrooms, being turned into a monkey, falling from a bridge being held up by " slaves", or gaining 90 years in age. The last panel in each strip was always one of Nemo waking up, usually in or near his bed, and often being scolded (or comforted) by one of the grownups of the household after crying out in his sleep and waking them. The strip related the dreams of a little boy: Nemo (meaning "nobody" in Latin), the hero. Although a comic strip, it was far from a simple children's fantasy it was often dark, surreal, threatening, and even violent. Hop is a hero who’ll have Kristen Ashley fans swooning.
